Marriage Preparation
President Nelson has said, “marriage brings greater possibilities for happiness than does any other human relationship”. (Nurturing Marriage, General Conference, April 2006)
The information below should help you as you plan and prepare for building that happiness in your marriage.
Preparing Financially
Budgeting: Talk to one of the BYUH finance professors or another trusted person in your life who has experience with budgeting and financial planning. You can also meet with us for insights and support, but the biggest challenge is maintaining your budget.
Financial Planning Workshops: There are online trainings such as workshops at StudentLingo. Sign in to view workshops such as Financial Literacy: Smart Money Skills For College & Beyond.

Family Planning: “The decision about how many children to have and when to have them is extremely personal and private. It should be left between the couple and the Lord.” (General Handbook 38.6.4).
Set Healthy Boundaries: Be open in discussing your individual boundary needs within your marriage and your boundaries with friends, family, and extended family, etc.
After Getting Married
Change Your Marital Status and/or Name Change: Update online at the Registrar’s Office. Provide a legal marriage certificate for name changes. You will need a passport that has been updated with your new name.
Apply for Financial Aid: Some students are eligible for more aid once they change their status to "married". Update your FAFSA status at Federal Student Aid. Log in to your account and select "Make a Correction”. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more details: (808) 675-3316.
Add Spouse to Student Health Plan: Notify BYUH Student Medical Benefit within 30 days of marriage. Visit the Student Medical Benefit office or contact Beth Martin at beth.martin@byuh.edu.
Relationship Health: Couples counseling is offered at Counseling Services, addressing issues related to communication, adjustment to changing roles, parenting, postpartum transitions, and managing conflict.
“Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, is the only lamp by which you can successfully see the path of love and happiness for you and for your sweetheart. How should I love thee? As He does, for that way “never faileth.”
