Beginning Basics of Dating

Dating is a joyful and meaningful step in preparing for healthy, lasting, and eternal relationships. While dating can sometimes feel intimidating, it doesn't have to be complicated.

A good date should

A man and a woman standing
Allow two people to get to know each other.
A group of people sitting and listening
Follow a plan that is shared with the other person ahead of time.
A group of people painting
Take place in a safe, public environment.
A woman and a man sitting
Include a wholesome activity that encourages comfortable conversation.
A man and a woman standing
Have a clear, predetermined ending.

A Few Things to Remember

  • A single date does not mean you are getting married or entering an exclusive relationship. It simply means you are getting to know each other as friends with potential.
  • You can enjoy and learn from a date even if you don't envision that person as your eternal companion.
  • At the same time, it is perfectly acceptable to realize after one date that you are not interested in pursuing another.
  • Dating is not a status update or an opportunity for gossip, speculation, or unkindness. Speaking respectfully about those you date helps create a culture of kindness and trust.

Physical Expressions of Affection and Consent

Physical expressions of affection or romantic interest that are consistent with God's law of chastity—such as holding hands, an embrace, or a kiss—should be preceded by clear communication and affirmative consent. This is especially important as relationships develop and can be particularly relevant at the end of a date.

Principles of Consent and Respect

  • Agency is foundational to God's plan.
  • Trust cannot be built where agency is ignored, and love cannot exist where coercion or manipulation is present.
  • A person should clearly communicate, through words or actions, their willingness to engage in physical expressions of affection.
  • The absence of a "no" does not mean "yes," and consent given on one occasion does not imply consent in the future.
  • Any action that violates another person's agency is contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Abuse of any kind—emotional, physical, sexual, or spiritual—is unacceptable and a violation of sacred covenants.
